
Something I hear a lot from decorators is:
‘I don’t get anything through my website, it’s a waste of money’
Well…if you want to stop ‘wasting money’ here’s some advice on what you can do.
(And no, it’s not to shut the thing down!)
To get more business from your website there are 3 steps:
- Get people to visit your website
- Once they’re on your website, you need them to contact you
- Follow up on the enquiry and close the deal
I’m not going to bother with step 3 in this blog.
I’m going to assume you’re already good at turning enquiries into jobs.
Where most people fall down are steps 1 & 2.
How to get more people to your website
When people talk about increasing the number of visitors or ‘traffic’ to a website, they usually start banging on about SEO, keywords and flux capacitors.
Whilst that’s important, you need to get the fundamentals sorted first.
Think about why someone would want to visit your website. What will they get out of it? What are they trying to learn?
If they are looking to hire you as a decorator, they’ll want to learn about you and your business. They want to see if you’ll do a good job.
To help with this, make sure your website has an up to date gallery of your work and a couple of case studies.
You should also include testimonials from happy customers.
Most importantly, you need to answer the sort of questions they are typing into Google.
Think about all the questions you typically get asked by customers, and make sure they can find the answers to those questions on your website.
Then whenever a potential customer types that question into Google, you’ll pop up first and they’ll visit your website.
How to convert visitors into enquiries
The most important thing to do here is to make it as simple as possible for someone to contact you.
Have a big button saying contact now, and make sure it’s visible on every page of your website.
Ensure you have multiple forms of contact (phone, text, email, web enquiry form). It needs to be as easy as possible!
Also list your contact info in the footer section of every page on your site.
The next thing to do is to make sure people can see who you are and what you are like.
It can be intimidating inviting a tradesman into your home.
Firstly, I recommend you include photos of you/your team. People love to put a face to the name.
Secondly, show some personality throughout your website.
You’re not a big corporation. So, don’t build a generic, corporate style website.
When you’re writing on your website, write in a friendly/conversational tone. Much like how you would speak to a customer in real life.
If you like to have a laugh with customers in real life, have a bit of fun on your website too.
For most sole traders, your personality is your biggest asset. Don’t hide it!
Follow these basic tips and you’ll steadily increase the number of visitors coming to your website and the volume of enquiries you receive.
