Would you pay £50 for a jar of coffee?
How about £500?
Well…the answer is yes…and no.
When you frame it as a jar of instant coffee, you’ll probably only want to pay about £5.
And for that £5 you’ll get about 100 cups of coffee.
However…if you are buying capsules for your Nespresso machine you’ll happy pay £50 for 100 cups of coffee, as 50p per pod is a decent price.
If you go to a posh coffee shop, you’ll pay up to £5 for 1 coffee.
That’s 100x the cost of instant coffee.
So, how do we justify the difference in cost?
And how can we use this to charge more for decorating work?
The first thing to realise is that coffee from a pod doesn’t taste 10x better than instant coffee.
And Starbucks coffee doesn’t taste 10x better than a pod.
Quality is part of the equation. But it’s not all of it.
This is much the same when it comes to being a decorator.
The quality of your work is important. But if you want to increase your prices you need to bring other things to the table too.
Using a Nespresso capsule feels like a treat. And you can have something a little different to the standard black coffee.
Make sure your clients feel like they are having a treat by hiring you as a decorator. Try to give them something they couldn’t do themselves. (Like a flawless spray finish!)
Having a coffee from Starbucks is as much about the experience as it is the coffee. You get comfy seats to help you relax and enjoy the moment.
Can you offer an unforgettable experience for your customers?
Can you work to their time frame? Can you offer clear and useful communication to keep them relaxed?
Think about all the extra things you can do to elevate the customer experience and you’ll find increasing your prices is much easier.
