How to get better referrals…say goodbye to d#ckhead customers!


Ever felt like a lot of the enquiries / customers you get are not quite right for your business?

Do you end up working for a lot of people who do your head in?

It happens to most businesses at one point or another.

Here’s what typically happens…

Work is a bit quiet, so you end up agreeing to do a job for a customer you wouldn’t ideally want to work for.

You get a feeling they’re going to be a bit ‘tricky’, but you tell yourself it’s ok. The money is enough for you to put up with it.

However…you’re a really good decorator.

And you know what people do when they find a really good decorator?

They tell their friends.

The problem is that the customer is a bit of a dickhead.

And you know what sort of people dickheads hang around with? Other dickheads.

Before you know it, you are working for a lot of….well….dickheads!

How do you get out of this cycle?

There are two things you need to do:

  1. Use alternative ways to generate new enquiries / customers. Don’t rely 100% on word of mouth and referrals.
  2. Say no to customers who aren’t a good fit for you and your business.

Note: I’ve put the steps in this order because step 2 is much easier if you have lots of enquiries coming in as a result of step 1!

Then guess what happens when you only work for great people?

They tell all their great friends about you.

And you get loads of enquiries from great customers. No more dickheads!
