A good service at a good price is pointless

If you want to give your customers a rush of endorphins and make them love you, then it helps to operate at the extreme ends of the scale.

It helps to be either cheap and efficient…or expensive and luxurious.

Let’s look at some examples…

Imagine you are going out for a meal.

The most successful businesses in the industry tend to be either: cheap, fast, and convenient like McDonalds, or expensive and very high quality, like Michelin star restaurants.

The less successful establishments are the ones offering ‘good food at a fair price’.

Yes… the local village pub.

You know the one…the pub that’s had 3 different owners in the last 5 years because nobody has quite been able to make it work.

Yes, the food is decent, and the price is fair. But it doesn’t inspire you to come back time and time again, does it?

If it was as cheap as McDonalds, you might go once a week. If it was as fancy as a Michelin star restaurant, you’d be excited to tell all your friends and family about it.

But it’s not. It’s just in the middle. It’s boring.

Getting a bargain in Primark gives you a dopamine rush. So does spending £1,000’s in Gucci.

But buying a reasonably priced pair of trousers in Debenhams didn’t make you feel anything…and that’s part of the reason they went out of business.

Mid-level retailers are struggling everywhere you look, whereas low-end and high-end retailers are booming!

So, if you want to give people a rush when they choose your decorating business, consider moving away from the middle (good service at a good price) and think about moving towards the extremes of the scale.

Give your customers an experience they are excited to tell their friends about and you’ll never be short of business.
