Simon Johnson – Property Ready

An interview with a decorator – Simon Johnson, Property Ready

How and when did you start decorating?

When leaving school in 1985 my father told me to “get a trade son” I completed my City & Guilds in 1987

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Finishing a job, standing back and saying to myself “I did that”. Job satisfaction!

What’s your least favourite part of the job?

The frustration of not all customers understanding the time taken and what fully goes into the preparation & layering up coats to achieve the best end result.

Tell us a funny story about a job

The first building company I worked for were asked to paint the floor to a private garage, situated on a private estate. Everyday we had to wheel out the vast collection of vintage and new Ferrari’s, (including an F40 & a Daytona, in total I remember 15 cars!) Day one completed and we had to wheel all the cars back in for the night (as we had been instructed) on returning to work the following morning ALL the cars were stuck to the floor…A specialist car wheel cleaning company had to be enlisted!

If you weren’t a decorator, what would you be?

A professional cyclist, crowned Tour d’France winner several times, I’d have my own bike shop, bike brand, and tinker about with bikes in the workshop all day long.

If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice to make you a better decorator, what would it be?

I would have kept a customer database since day dot, logging names, addresses, works completed, specifications, colours and paints used!

Thanks again to Simon for taking the time to answer my questions.

I am looking to talk to as many decorators as possible over the coming months so we can share knowledge and hopefully raise the profile of the industry as a whole.
