This week we catch up with Joe Dean of JL Decorating & Building Services
If you want to follow Joe you can find his Facebook business page here
How and when did you start decorating?
I was 19 and fresh out of college after completing a NVQ in bricklaying, due to the recession there were no jobs , my friend offered me a job on a painting firm , 11 years later here I am still on the brush
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Completion , still get great satisfaction seeing what you have produced and the smile on the customers face , let’s not forget the getting paid part too
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
Least favourite is prep work , most time consuming and boring part , but it’s what makes the job so just got to crack on
What’s your favourite decorating tool / piece of kit?
My favourite tools are my dustless mirka set up , I would be lost without them , every decorator should own a dustless set up , they’re game changers !
Tell us a funny/memorable story about a job:
A few years back at a company I worked for with my best pal Danny we used to get up to all sorts , we used to urinate in the old boys kettle of brushes , flick cat crap off our scrapers at other decorators when painting external shed doors and my pal used to always fart in one of the other blokes lunchbox ( he was a nob btw )
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made on a job? The biggest ‘oh sh*t’ moment?
Not really made any mistakes just little ones from getting roller spray on window cills to spilling coffee on customer’s carpets
If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would be the first 3 things you’d do with the money?
I would buy a nice house for me, my partner and children , fly all my family and close friends to a holiday out in Florida , then take all the lads out to Ibiza to to celebrate
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Morph into 2 of me so days I want to relax the other me can go in
If you weren’t a decorator, what would you be?
I would definitely be in another trade , I like keeping myself occupied and changing scenery all the time , couldn’t be sat in an office
If you could change one thing about the industry to improve it, what would it be?
Make decorators registered , it would stop any one just buying a pack of brushes and calling themselves a painter , would be fewer horror stories you hear too
Imagine you moved your business to a new town. You have no existing customers or word of mouth to fall back on. How do you generate leads and get yourself up and running?
Post business flyers and cards , get in touch with local firms , social media is a big part of today also sign up to the likes of Checkatrade , my builder , rated people etc
What do you get up to when you’re not on the brush? Any hobbies?
I enjoy going swimming and to the gym , I enjoy days out with my partner and children also like to socialise with friends over a beer
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice to make you a better decorator, what would it be?
Would tell myself to keep doing what I’m doing , as everything seems to be going good , learning from your mistakes will make you a better decorator
Thanks again to Joe to taking part.
