How and when did you start decorating?
After having many various jobs I decided I wanted a complete change of career. I went to work for my brother in 2002 part time to start with. I liked it that much I’ve carried on with it since then.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
When I start a job I sometimes think, I can’t see this room looking any better when I’ve finished it as it looks pretty good now, and blow me down, the transformation is unbelievable!
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
I don’t like outsides especially when its painted render. I’ve always thought of it as donkey work.
Tell us a funny story about your job:
When I was working for my brother maybe about 4 years into it. We were working in a sitting room. I was tasked with glossing the door with crown gloss. The day after my brother said to me. What have you done! Your door is too shiny! I’m like what!? At the time he seemed really annoyed about it but I couldn’t understand what the issue was. I was only laughing to myself about it the other week. I did mention it to him but he doesn’t remember it! So I’ll never know what he meant by that 🤔
If you weren’t a decorator what would you be?
At school I wanted to be an architect or something to do with design within the car industry. I’ve no idea why I didn’t, but I wasn’t that academic but creative.
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice to make you a better decorator, what would it be?
For me, I guess it would be regarding preparation. I think I’m my worst own enemy. You finish a job and think, wish I’d filled that.
Thanks again to Nicholas for taking the time to answer my questions.
I am looking to talk to as many decorators as possible over the coming months so we can share knowledge and hopefully raise the profile of the industry as a whole.
