Peter Mann – PRM Decorating
How and when did you start decorating?
I started my decorating business in 2014 just after my eldest daughter was born. Prior to that I had spent 10 years working in the insurance industry after completing a degree in politics. The impending arrival of my daughter made me re-evaluate things and I was certain I didn’t want to carry on in insurance for another 20 years. I’d always enjoyed decorating so took the plunge and went back to college to do a city and guilds qualification and haven’t looked back since.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the job is seeing a room or space completely transformed and the pleasure that brings the client. Having a happy customer at the end of the job is priceless.
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
Least favourite part of the job for me is prep! An essential part of any job but I much prefer it when it’s time to start applying paper or paint. I need to get an apprentice to do all my prep for me!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
If I had a superpower It would be omnilingualism. How cool would it be to instantly speak and understand any language?
Tell us a funny story about a job:
My first ever job was working for a Dr. she wanted the balustrade and spindles painted which were brown satin. She left the paint out and went to bed has she’d been on night shift. Later on she appeared and said ‘oh that looks good, will the paint go brown like the existing colour.’ No I said. Turns out Homebase had mixed up the wrong colour paint for both the undercoat and topcoat! Always open the paint in front of the customer before you start!
If you won the lottery tomorrow, what would be the first 3 things you’d do with the money?
Invest in property, buy a new house for my dad, go on a round the world holiday (when lockdown is over).
If you weren’t a decorator, what would you be?
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice to make you a better decorator, what would it be?
Start sooner. Imagine the skill and knowledge you’d have if you hadn’t spent 10 years behind a desk.
Thanks again to Peter for taking the time to answer my questions.
I am looking to talk to as many decorators as possible over the coming months so we can share knowledge and hopefully raise the profile of the industry as a whole.
