My Dad is a carpenter. Well…if you ask him, he’d say he’s a chippy. Either way, it started as a hobby and then moved into a profession. Overall, he has about 30 years of experience in the industry.
About 10 years ago he was hanging some doors for a client and took his Dad (Pappy to me!) with him for a bit of help.
When re-hanging a door, he found one of the hinges had a stripped hole. Not uncommon, I would guess 90% of people reading this have experienced this issue.
So, he started doing what he always did. What he’d done for 20 years. Use some matchsticks to fill the stripped hole, so that there is some fresh timber to screw into.
At this point, Pappy produced a wooden golf tee from his pocket.
He then proceeded to tap the golf tee into the stripped hole, snapped off the head of the tee and screwed on the hinge.
Some of you may know this little trick, some may not. My Dad did not. After seeing it, he quickly realised how much better this solution was! Wooden golf tees already have a point and a head on them. You can buy a bag of 100 tees all the same size, so you can always drill the hole out to fit. It’s almost a perfect solution.
What’s better is that if you’re a golfer, you’ll already have loads! Plus, they now become tax deductible. I know this as my Dad has done it. Here is the original conversation he had with his accountant:
Accountant: You can’t claim the tax on 100 golf tees!
Dad: I can if I’m banging them into walls!
Dad explains, and the accountant says…well on that basis, I suppose you can!
